They would meet after school at 4:20 p.m. to search for a rumored abandoned cannabis crop. They never found the plants, but they did create something even more enduring: a code word that would quietly spread from friend group to friend group, eventually making its way into cannabis culture at large.
Over the decades, “420” evolved from an inside joke to a symbol of connection, advocacy, and normalization. By the 1990s, it had been popularized nationwide, thanks in part to Grateful Dead fans and cannabis activists who embraced it as a rallying cry for reform.
